Trump vows to implement Mexico, Canada tariffs

美国总统唐纳德·特朗普表示，将按计划对从加拿大和墨西哥进口的商品征收25%的关税，而中国将被额外征收10%的关税。

US president Donald Trump says that the proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico will go ahead as planned, while China will be charged an additional 10%.

If enacted, these tariffs are likely to fuel inflation across North America, as Mexico and Canada are the most important trading partners for the US, Kallanish learns. The supply chain of industries such as automotive sprawl across the three countries, with car parts crossing the borders multiple times before final assembly.

RBC Capital Markets分析师Tom Narayan评论说：“底特律三强（通用汽车、Stellantis和福特）短期内可以通过向美国转移生产来应对，但永久性关税（无论可能性有多大）可能会造成巨大的利润损失。”

“The Detroit-3 [General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford] could cope in the short term through production shifts to the US, but permanent tariffs (however unlikely) could cause significant profit losses,” comments Tom Narayan, analyst at RBC Capital Markets.

In a post on his social media platform Truth, Trump writes that drugs such as fentanyl are “still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels.” These drugs are made and supplied by China, he alleges.

该关税将从3月4日起生效，2月初曾被搁置一个月，以便华盛顿与其两个邻国进行谈判。加拿大总理贾斯汀·特鲁多告诉记者，政府的重点是避免征收关税。

The tariffs, which will be active from 4 March, had been put on hold for a month in early February to allow for negotiations between Washington and its two neighbours. Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, told reporters that the government is focused on avoiding the tariffs.

“If on Tuesday there are unjustified tariffs brought in on Canada, we will have an immediate and strong response,” he added, noting that only 1% of fentanyl in the US comes from Canada, which is also affected by the crisis.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday that secretary of economy Marcelo Ebrard and finance secretary Rogelio Ramirez were travelling to Washington to negotiate. She said that her government maintains a “cool head” and remains “optimistic” about the negotiations.

中国政府表示“强烈反对”美国的这一举动，并将在必要时采取报复行动。中国外交部发言人林剑在周五表示：“施压、胁迫和威胁不是同中国打交道的正确方式……中方敦促美方纠正错误的做法，回到通过平等磋商解决各自关切的正确轨道。”

Beijing says it “deplores and opposes” the US move, and will retaliate if needed. Lin Jian, spokesperson of the country’s foreign affairs ministry, said Friday: “Pressure, coercion and threat is not the right way to deal with China… we urge the US to correct its wrongdoing and return to the right track of addressing each other’s concerns through equal-footed consultations.”
