ASEAN billet market lull drags on after holiday

上周东盟方坯进口市场表现平淡，供应商报价坚挺，甚至以小幅上涨为目标。另一方面，买家仍持观望态度。

The ASEAN billet import market was muted last week as suppliers held offers firm or even aimed for small gains. Buyers, on the other hand, remain on the sidelines.

Offer prices remain at around $465/tonne cfr Manila for open-origin 5sp 130mm billet, unchanged in the past few weeks because of the slowdown surrounding the Lunar New Year holiday. “Prices have barely moved, although Dexin [Steel] and the Chinese mills are pushing prices up,” a Manila trader says. He adds that customers’ price ideas are unchanged, with one customer indicating interest at around $450/t cfr.

Some traders say they see offers at $467/t cfr Manila and higher. The regional market remains quiet with no bookings heard concluded in ASEAN. However, Malaysian 3sp 150mm billet was heard to have been sold via a Chinese trader at around $442-443/t fob Malaysia to a Turkish mill on around 27-28 January.

Indonesia’s Dexin Steel hiked the export price of its 3sp 150mm billet for April shipment last Friday to $447/t fob, up $2/t from the day before and $4/t from pre-holiday.

Meanwhile, the Chinese billet export market has been quiet after the holiday because of the stronger yuan against the dollar. Export prices have been pushed up to levels where Chinese billet has lost competitiveness and traders have few opportunities to strike deals. Traders are opting to negotiate on a case-by-case basis rather than to publicly quote prices.
